The timing might be surprising, but many who watch Notre Dame basketball closely are not especially surprised that coach Mike Brey has decided to retire at the end of the current season. Brey himself seemed to preview Thursday’s announcement in his comments after Tuesday’s home loss to Florida State. Brey’s 23 seasons at Notre Dame include 13 NCAA tournament appearances, including back to back Elite Eights in 20-15-and-16, and a coach of the year honor in 20-11, when the Irish went undefeated at home. Brey will leave at the end of the season as the winningest coach in program history. The Irish host Boston College Saturday at 2 here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Meanwhile, the 7th ranked Notre Dame women survived a dogfight last night at Clemson, holding on for a 57-54 win. Notre Dame is back home Sunday at 2:00pm against Virginia.

In the Big Ten last night, 3rd ranked Purdue over Minnesota, 61-39. Indiana won at Illinois, 80-to-65. Michigan State downed 23rd ranked Rutgers 70-to-57, and Michigan fell at Maryland 64-58.

NFL playoffs this weekend have Jacksonville at Kansas City, and the New York Giants at Philly on Saturday, Cincinnati at Buffalo and Dallas at San Francisco on Sunday. We join in progress Saturday after Notre Dame basketball, and Sunday’s coverage begins at 2:30 on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Hockey: the Chicago Blackhawks won at Philadelphia, 4-to-1. The Detroit Redwings edged the Golden Nights in Las Vegas, 3-to-2.

Notre Dame hockey has two Big Ten games at Penn State, tonight and tomorrow. The puck today drops at 6:30, 5pm Saturday, both games on Quality Rock Z 94-3.
