Morning Sports Podcast: Tuesday, March 21st

We now have a game time for Notre Dame women’s basketball in the Sweet 16 this Saturday in Greenville, South Carolina. The Irish will take on Maryland of the Big Ten in the first game of the day Saturday, an 11:30am tipoff, with coverage rolling at 11:15 on sister station Live 99-9. A win Saturday would send the Irish into the Regional Final on Monday against the winner of Saturday’s game between UCLA and defending national champion and top overall seed South Carolina. The Indiana Hoosiers women’s season came to an end Monday in a 70-to-68 loss to Miami as the second round of the tournament wrapped up. The Hoosiers were the top seed in their region.

As the men’s tournament prepares for Sweet 16 games Thursday and Friday this week, the Purdue Boilermakers are wondering what might have been, after a disappointing performance in their tournament opener last Friday, resulting in a loss by the number one seeded Boilers to 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson, only the second time ever a one lost to a 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Matt Painter says poor outside shooting and turnovers doomed Purdue, and they have to, in his words, sit in it, and figure out how to be better next time. Purdue has a history of falling short of their seeding in the tournament.

Major League players participating in the World Baseball Classic will be back with their teams this week, as the tournament comes to an end tonight with the championship game between Japan and the U-S. Japan earned it’s berth with a 6-to-5 win over Mexico last night. The U-S downed Venezuela Sunday to reach the title game. Major League baseball opens the 20-23 season March 30th.

In the NBA: the Chicago Bulls won at Philadelphia, 109-105. The Indiana Pacers took a 115-109 loss at Charlotte. The Detroit Pistons are at Atlanta tonight.

Hockey: the Chicago Blackhawks lost at Colorado, 5-nothing. The Redwings took a 5-to-2 home loss to the Florida Panthers in Detroit.
