Morning Sports Podcast: Monday, March 27th

The Notre Dame women’s basketball season came to an end Saturday in an NCAA Sweet 16 round loss to Maryland. The Irish took a one point lead to the halftime locker room, but the third quarter pretty much settled the outcome, as Maryland went on a 13-1 run to end the quarter, and the Irish never seriously threatened the rest of the way. 76-to-59 was the final score. Injured senior guard Dara Mabrey was seen in tears on the bench as the clock wound down, her Notre Dame playing career at an end. The Irish finish the season with a 27-and-6 record, ranked as high as 10th nationally for much of the season.

The men’s Final Four is now set, after Florida Atlantic, UConn, San Diego State, and Miami each won a regional final Saturday or Sunday. This is the lowest seeded group of teams in the Final Four in memory, with a four, two fives, and a nine seed reaching the national semifinals in Houston this Saturday. We will have live coverage of both games Saturday night and the title game a week from tonight here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

The women’s Final Four will be filled out tonight after South Carolina and Maryland play, followed by Virginia Tech and Ohio State. LSU and Iowa are already in.

Notre Dame football continued spring practice over the weekend, with quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Tyler Buchner competing for the starting job this fall. Hartman is generally considered the favorite on the basis of his strong record at Wake Forest before he transfered to Notre Dame after last season. Hartman has one season of eligibility remaining. The Blue Gold Spring game is April 22nd here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

NBA: the Chicago Bulls beat the Lakers in LA, 118-108. The Indiana Pacers host Dallas tonight, and the Detroit Pistons are at home against Milwaukee.
