Morning Sports Podcast: Friday, March 24th

Michigan State gave all it had in last night’s NCAA Sweet 16 matchup against favored Kansas State. The Spartans edged ahead in overtime, but couldn’t quite close it out in a 98-93 loss to end their tournament run in the round of 16. The Spartans were the only Big Ten team to make the round of 16 this year. Other results last night: Florida Atlantic upset Tennessee, 62-55, UConn blasted Arkansas 88-65, and Gonzaga edged UCLA, 79-76. Four more NCAA Sweet 16 games tonight starting at 6 on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Irish women’s basketball faces what most analysts see as an uphill battle tomorrow against favored Maryland in their Sweet 16 game in Greenville, South Carolina. That’s wouldn’t be so if the Irish didn’t have two key players down with injuries, guards Dara Mabrey and Olivia Miles. Coach Niele Ivey says the challenge is accepted, and the Irish face the Terps in tomorrow’s first game of the day at 11:30am, with Sean Stires calling it for you on sister station Live 99-9.

There’s a lot of respect for reported new Irish men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry among former colleagues, not least among them IU-South Bend women’s coach Steve Bruce. Bruce and Shrewsberry overlapped at IUSB during Shrewsberry’s first head coaching job there, before he went on to assistant jobs at Butler and Purdue before taking over the Penn State program two years ago. Shrewsberry is expected to officially become Mike Brey’s replacement at Notre Dame next week.

Hockey: the Chicago Blackhawks lost at Washington, 6-to-1. St. Louis downed the Redwings in Detroit, 4-to-3.
