Local BMX star Brett Banasiewicz suffered a serious injury Thursday, when he fell eight feet during a practice session and landed on his head.
Banasiewicz was in Virginia Beach, VA preparing for the LXVI BMX Invitational. While attempting a 720, which is a pretty easy trick for him to complete, he caught his back tire and fell eight feet to the floor. He was wearing a helmet at the time.
Banasiewicz was taken to the trauma center at Norfolk General, where he is under sedation.
His mother, Lisa Banasiewicz, told WSBT's David McCoy via email that Brett suffered a brain bleed and was placed in a medically induced coma to prevent swelling and let his brain heal, but was responsive to nurses. He was hooked up to a ventilator.
His mother said he is kicking his feet and squeezing a friend's hand, as well as reacting to pain. She said that the pressure in his brain is "at a good point." He will remain under sedation for the rest of the night and likely for the next three days.
He did not suffer a back or spine injury, and doctors have removed his precautionary neck collar.
"His neck and back are fine," Lisa Banasiewicz said. "(We can tell that) he is aware of his BMX friends by his eye movements. Nurse said she would pinch him, and he made a fist. They are going to keep him sedated for three days and then let him wake up on his own and then we will be able to see how he is. Cat scans are looking good. He is stable. The prayers are working. He is not out of the woods, but at the best hospital in Virginia. We are taking every precaution and letting God and the doctors heal him."
Several of Brett Banasiewicz's BMX friends, as well as his father, are there with him in the hospital. His mother will fly out to join him in the morning.
Lisa Banasiewicz posted on her Facebook page, asking people to keep her son in their prayers.
"The next 24-48 hours is going to be very rough, but I know with God & prayer & positive thoughts (Brett) will be all right. We probably won't know anything for 24-48 hrs, but I will try to update when I can," she posted.
Banasiewicz won the BMX park event on the Dew Tour last weekend.
