One man dead. Three people injured. Four people in jail. It's all the outcome of a fight turned deadly late Thursday night in Goshen.
Daniel Heflin, 21, of Goshen is accused of murder. His mother talked with WSBT Friday morning.
Sherry Heflin said someone went to her son's home and asked him and his girlfriend, Elisa Horton, to help with a fight happening at an apartment complex in the 600 blk of River Ave. She claimed someone told her son a 17-year-old girl was being beaten by a family member.
"They came to help, that's all they did," Sherry Heflin told WSBT.
Art Vargas said he witnessed the incident from his front porch across the street.
"There were shots fired and that's when I went back in and told my wife, 'You need to get somebody out here because I thought I heard some gunshots. This is escalating really quick,'" he recalled.
Vargas' wife dialed 911.
A short time later, Vargas said he watched a red pickup truck with at least four people in the back and a car speed away from the scene.
Police recognized a description of the pickup and pulled it over near Lincoln and Indiana Ave. In the truck, police found John Staub, 26, dead from a gunshot wound.
Meanwhile, officers responding to reports of additional gunshot victims found a man shot in the leg and Staub's older brother James cut from flying glass.
A short time later, investigators recognized a car matching the description of the car seen at the apartment and pulled it over. They arrested four people ... including Heflin ... in connection with the shooting. Heflin was booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder.
Parents Speak
"There were three men in the car. Evidently my son wasn't the only one that got out of the car. But my son's the only one being charged with murder," Sherry Heflin said.
Heflin said to her knowledge, her son doesn't own a gun.
Meanwhile, family members of the man Daniel Heflin is accused of gunning down want answers.
"He was a good kid," said John Stilley, father of John Staub. "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I hope [the people in custody] get the whole extent that they got coming to them. Every bit of it."
Staub leaves behind two small children ... 3-years-old and 6-years-old.
"My son didn't have no gun. He didnt' have no reason to shoot nobody. I just don't understand it," Stilley said.
What's Next?
The Elkhart County prosecutor has not yet filed formal charges in the case. A spokeswoman told WSBT they're waiting for the police report and should decide next week.
