SOUTH BEND -- The next police chief will be one of three men, all of whom are from out of town.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg says they're highly-qualified and that they rose to the top of the list during the city's extensive search.
After months of searching, the city announced its finalists in the job search, Thursday.
Bruce Marquis has been police chief in two cities; Hartford, Connecticut, and most recently Norfolk, Virginia. He now works as a law enforcement consultant.
According to a video report by PBS station WHRO, crime in Norfolk dropped under Marquis' command, but he was criticized for the way he handled a case where a police recruit died during self-defense training, having been repeatedly punched in the head.
“What happened with the recruit was an accident. One in one thousand, one in a million, it was an accident,” Marquis said in a video posted online.
He retired early from the job, the report stated.
Ronald Teachman worked his way up through the ranks of the New Bedford, Massachusetts police department, eventually becoming chief.
According to published reports, while there he came up with a program to put uniformed police officers in schools on a weekly basis to build a better relationship between law enforcement and the community.
Some people felt it would've been better to have those officers on the streets, the reports stated.
Christopher Elg is currently the police chief in west Monroe, Louisiana. He started his career in 1985 as a state trooper in New York.
According to published reports, he's also interviewing for chief jobs in Bismarck, North Dakota and Bellingham, Washington.
The finalists will soon meet with Mayor Buttigieg for an in-person interview. Once that's completed, the mayor will announce his pick.
