A South Bend man was charged Monday with three Class B felony counts of failing to return to the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury/operating while intoxicated. This comes after police say five people were hurt in a chain-reaction of drunk driving crashes early Sunday morning in South Bend.
This happened in the 1600 block of Western Avenue. South Bend police say Christopher Swanson, 44, of South Bend hit a vehicle, then hit another vehicle, and then hit three pedestrians crossing the street near the AMVETS Post 66.
One of those people, 28-year-old Darnell Starr of South Bend, was pinned under the car. Good samaritans helped lift the car off him.
Starr required surgery. He was listed in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to fair condition.
The other people hurt in the crash were treated and released.
