St. Joseph County Police said they responded to a call from a passerby about 8 a.m. Saturday.
Upon arrival, officers and fire personnel located a van that left the road way and struck a tree.
The only occupant was Rodney Murphy, the driver. He was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Memorial Hospital.
According to police, he suffered a serious head injury and was to have surgery. He also suffered injuries from exposure to the cold weather.
A nursing supervisor at Memorial Hospital said Murphy was in critical condition.
