Police: Elkhart fire may be a criminal matter

Police are now calling an apartment fire overnight in Elkhart an ongoing criminal investigation.

Elkhart Firefighters were dispatched to the apartment building in the 2700 block of Ridgewood Drive just after 1:30 this morning.

This is on Elkhart's south side. Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution, but we're told that no one was injured and the apartment didn't suffer major damage.

But here's the part where police come in: Officers say they know that one man lives in the apartment and they can't find him. Investigators think he ran off after the fire.

There's no word yet on why police think this may be a criminal matter.
