Mishawaka is the latest community to start uploading crime reports to an interactive online map, which helps explain those flashing lights you might’ve seen in your neighborhood.
The website, www.CrimeReports.com, displays a colored icon on blocks where police investigated thefts, assaults, homicides, traffic emergencies, fires, and other calls.
The map, which is updated three times a day, also shows the names, addresses, and photos of registered sex offenders.
“We see the good and bad in technology and this is definitely something that is going to be a good, useful tool for us to use,” said Lt. Tim Williams, a spokesman for the Mishawaka Police Department.
CrimeReports.com is about more than just providing information to the public. It's also a way for investigators to bring in fresh leads, Williams said.
Users can send tips anonymously by clicking on a link on the site.
“That's huge, that's a great tool to have,” said Williams.
South Bend and Notre Dame are already on the site, which also has a mobile app. Users can set up alerts to notify them when certain crimes are reported nearby.
