SOUTH BEND -- Homeless shelters expected to fill most if not all of their beds, Tuesday night, as the forecast called for the temperature outside to dip to ten degrees.
By early evening, people were showing up to claim a bed at Center for the Homeless. Lisa Knox, Associate Director of Development for the shelter said it could be their busiest night in months.
“Any night, regardless of temperature, we get extra people here, but when it's especially cold like these, we know we're going to be a full house,” she said.
There are 30 beds at the shelter. A handful of other agencies downtown can house an additional 40, Knox said.
“We've been really lucky this winter,” she said, “this winter has been sort of calm and mild and while we've had weather amnesty guests in every single night, we haven't had the single digit threat like we have tonight.”
Knox said that on frigid nights the shelter regularly runs out of basic supplies like socks, towels, blankets, hats and gloves.
