SOUTH BEND — Pro Health fitness center downtown has closed, posting a letter dated Friday on its front door and telling its patrons it will issue refunds for the next 45 days.

The center, at 320 St. Joseph St., had originated for employees of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, which moved to a new building on Douglas Road in Mishawaka in 2009.

The letter said the Pro Health center was sold in 2004 to a private owner, “who was committed to continuing to provide a service to the community, not necessarily as a revenue-generating business.”

But the facility had endured too many losses in the last couple of years that it could no longer absorb, even as it made across-the-board cuts, the letter said.

“The decision to close Pro Health has been a very difficult one,” the letter said. “We have no taken its impact on the community and our patrons lightly.”

It referred patron questions to an e-mail address: prohealthfitness@aol.com.

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning, Memorial Health and Lifestyle Center downtown posted this message on its Facebook page:

“We're sorry to learn of the closing of Pro Health Fitness & Wellness Center just down the road from us. If you're a member of ProHealth ... Contact us right away at 647-2655 and ask about our ‘Transition Membership’ offer and a FREE week pass -- we don't want you to miss a single workout!”
