SOUTH BEND -- The Common Council passed a resolution, Monday evening, recommending that the Century Center board of managers publicly discuss a recent report, which suggested that the economic impact of the facility is not as much as city leaders thought.
“We are working to obviously find a solution for it,” said Henry Davis, Jr., a council member, before voting on the measure, which passed 8-1.
The resolution also recommends that Century Center managers prepare requests for proposals which “truly reflect the best interests of the city.”
The legislation was drafted in response to a study done by AECOM Technical Services, which indicates that the center had an economic impact of about $7.9 million in 2011. That number is far less than what was found in a study done in 2009.
“We're losing over a million dollars a year with the Century Center and it’s our fiduciary responsibility as fiscal agents of the city budget that we make sure we don't lose that type of money year in and year out without having some sort of answer for it,” said Davis Jr.
The president of the Century Center board earlier told WSBT that his company has increased revenue and decreased operating expenses, and that they're still attracting nearly $9 million to the city each year.
