The crash happened around 9:35 a.m. Saturday on Red Bud Trail to the south of the city, according to Chief Bill Marx with Buchanan police.
A vehicle heading northbound on Red Bud was apparently trying to pass when it lost control, crossed the center line and hit a southbound car.
The collision sent the nose of the southbound car onto the tracks. Officer Carmen Bovo, who arrived at the scene just minutes after the crash, told WSBT the woman in the car that landed on the tracks was dazed and unresponsive. Bovo’s first concern was getting her out of her vehicle and away from the tracks in case a train came along.
Minutes after he got her out, Bovo’s fear was realized. The crossing lights started flashing.
The wrecker hadn’t arrived in time to pull the car off the tracks. Amtrak had been contacted, but Bovo says it was too late to get the train stopped. It hit the empty vehicle, spinning it 15 feet away.
No one was seriously injured in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
