If you are married -- and even if you are not -- you know how hard relationships can be.
So on this special day, we wanted to get some advice from people whose relationships have stood the test of time.
They call themselves a modern couple:
"We have one Sony Reader, two Nooks and two iPads," says 83-year-old Gerald Lafferty as he navigates Facebook and Netflix on his iPad.
But 54 years ago, Gerald and his wife Lucia fell in love the old fashioned way.
"She captured me," says Gerald.
"He never had a chance," says Lucia, "I just knew he was the right person and we just clicked right off the bat."
They met at a bar on September 21, 1957.
"He was standing at a piano bar having a drink and I saw him," says Lucia, "I thought If he isn’t married, his number is up."
"And that is actually the way it happened," says Gerald.
They were married 9 months later. They had three kids, and now have plenty of grandchildren. They say the key to a happy marriage is respect and to just enjoy being together.
They've traveled together, and although Jerry never got to buy a boat, they say they have created a lot of great memories. The best part, though, has been the growing old together. Today they live at Holy Cross Village in South Bend.
"Where did the time go? That is what is so amazing," says Gerald.
"I think the time went fast because we had so much fun together," says Lucia, "Not that there weren't problems, cause there were, but we always solved them through together."
And hopefully there will be many more years of that.
