A Goshen woman is dead. Police say her ex-boyfriend, a former Goshen cop, shot and killed her Monday morning and then himself.
The bodies of 51-year-old John Eric Haitsma and 48-year-old Millicent Morros were found just before 8 a.m. in a parking lot in the 100 block of North 5th Street in Goshen.
Police are continuing their investigation and are not commenting on a motive at this time. But Facebook postings by Morros indicate she started dating someone else in February.
On Monday morning investigators held up white sheets to shield the bloody murder-suicide scene near the heart of downtown Goshen.
Morros had just gotten out of her car when police say Haitsma approached her.
They talked briefly, and then he pulled out a gun and shot her, then killed himself...all in broad daylight.
"We heard popping sounds and did not realize it was gunshots until later," said Denise Bontrager, who runs 1st Quality Cleaners near where the shooting happened. "We [went outside to see what was going on] and there was someone already calling 911 when we made it outside.”
Morros worked at the law firm of Yoder, Ainlay, Ulmer & Buckingham in Goshen – just a few hundred feet from where she was killed.
Coworkers say Morros started as a secretary in 2010 and was recently promoted to a paralegal position.
The firm released this statement:
"Millicent was a valued employee and friend and will be deeply missed by all her collegues."
Haitsma and Morros dated for some time, but it's unclear when they broke up.
Police say Haitsma resigned from the Goshen Police Department in '98 to start his own landscaping businesses.
He had been on the force for 8 years.
WSBT spoke with Haitsma's family Monday. They say they are very sorry about what's happened and want to deeply express their condolences to the Morros family.
This murder-suicide has left many in the community shaken.
"This kind of thing doesn't happen here," said a visibly upset Bontrager.
Haitsma has two children: a 21-year-old and a 9-year-old. The 9-year-old has been talking with counselors.
Morros was planning on receiving her Bachelor's Degree from Goshen College this spring.
Police say they have not found any reports or complaints of domestic abuse involving the couple.
Strange echoes in history
A Morros family member confirms to WSBT that Millicent's older sister, Valorie Morros, was shot and killed in 1991 at the age of 26 along with two others. At the time, WSBT reported there were indications the three victims may have been part of a lovers' triangle.
Killed along with Valorie Morros was 27-year-old Ronald Schalliol. This happened in the kitchen of a residence at 2119 Spansail in Niles Township.
A tip then led police to an apartment on north Fifth Street, where police say 27-year-old Jay Scott Wilson shot himself in the head as officers tried to gain entry.
