On his taunting penalty:
On whether he tied J’Marcus Webb’s shoe:
“I did. I loosened it and tied it. I guess my fatherly instincts were kicking in. I was trying to keep the drive going so we wouldn’t have to burn a timeout, but we burned it anyway.”
On two guards going down during the game:
“I asked (Mike) Tice when Lance Louis went down, and I was being serious - “who is coming in at guard?” Because I know Gabe had never played guard. I didn’t know what we were going to do. He said Gabe is going to play guard. I went and told him, ‘hey – just go in there, do what you can, keep your head up and use your hands.’ He’s a good player. He wants to do well. Any guy who has a lot of desire like him is going to go in there and give his best effort.”
On whether Jeremy Bates is getting more involved in the play-calling:
“Not that I’m aware of.”
On whether there is urgency in getting continuity with the offensive line:
“I don’t think it’s possible now with all the moving parts we have. With Lance going down, we’re not going to have that. We’re going to have to roll with the punches and the guys we have and we’ll see what we have. We are going to need to lean on our defense like we have before, run the ball well, be efficient through the air and see how far we can go with this.”
On whether his approach will need to change with the offensive line changes:
“Absolutely. When you have a line of new guys in there, I want to get rid of the ball fast, find my first read and take it. We also want to limit sacks. Sacks really kill those guys up front. The more I can do to get rid of the ball quickly and run the ball. If we have to design routes to shorten things up, so be it. We want to limit sacks and keep their confidence high.”
BRANDON MARSHALL, WR
On if he was battling with linebackers and DBs more today than other games he’s played to get the ball:
“No. I mean that Cover-2 and playing that zone. The windows get small sometimes when you go against teams that really know how to play it and today we knew it was going to be small windows. When you have a quarterback like Jay Cutler, there is no hole too small. You have to praise Jay on that one because he was throwing some great balls and putting them in windows where most quarterbacks can’t throw into.”
On having two catches last week without Cutler and why he is so much better with Cutler:
“I say it every game. Some days it’s a shot glass, some days it’s a wheelbarrow. Today was definitely a wheelbarrow. I caught a bunch of balls, but the thing I loved today was Earl Bennett got us started making big plays, Kellen [Davis] making a big catch for us. That’s what I want to see and that felt good out there seeing those other guys involved early and when they do that it’s just a matter of time before I get going. I’m really excited to see the offense rolling the way we did today. We had a lot of rhythm and we still left a lot out there. We will get back, watch film, and see how we can grow as an offense.”
On what his conversations with Cutler were like this week in preparation for today’s game:
“Honestly, Jay was fired, sense of urgency. The most I’ve seen all year. He was ready to go. He was fired up. His balls had a lot of zip on them all week. He wanted it perfect in practice and I think it showed in the game, it transferred over, because he was on fire today.”
